Gregory (Greg) Kie Oral History

Gregory E. Kie is a member of the award-winning SUNY Canton Public Relations team, who serves as one of the two primary content creators for the department. He was originally hired as a part-time temporary employee tasked with writing news releases following a brief stint as a reporter. Evolving alongside SUNY Canton, he has contributed images and written articles for every major college publication during his career. Greg has earned three SUNY Council for University Advancement awards for writing, and the SUNY Chancellor's Award for excellence in professional service. A 1998 SUNY Plattsburgh graduate, Greg fondly recalls classes with the late Sculpture Professor Don Osbourne, his painting instructor and mentor Peter Russom, in addition to the enduring patience of Printmaking Professor Diane Fine. Perhaps the best advice he received during college was from the late English Professor Daphne Kutzer, who said (paraphrased) "Get a job after graduation and start working. It can be any job. If that job doesn't work for you, go get another job until you find the right one." A lifelong photographer and an arts major, Greg has served as an adjunct instructor in SUNY Canton’s Graphic and Multimedia Design program for the past decade and helped students launch careers in photography. He’s volunteered with the college’s steel bridge team, and helps students paint their creation in preparation for the annual AISC Student Steel Bridge competition. He’s also been a League of Legends coach for the college’s thriving esports program and continues to support new video game initiatives. Greg’s interests include reading, music, painting, chess, fashion, and motorcycles. He lives in Potsdam with his wife, Rebecca (Fregoe) Kie '99 and two children. His family largely tolerates him and his neurotic hobbies.
